When it comes to safety and compliance for any commercial building project in Houston, it’s imperative for a fire alarm system to be installed during the process. There are several stages to the process of adding a fire alarm itself, from initial planning to the final inspection. Which will require approved plans which you may already have. In this blog we will cover the steps involved during commercial fire alarm installation and what you can expect throughout the process and how Maverick can help. However, if you are interested in a free consultation, call us today at (832)653-2598.
The first step in the process begins with approved architectural plans in a CAD format and a site walk by one of our commercial consultants. If this is not an existing building but, a planned building then a face to face meeting always helps to discuss details. These approved architectural plans will provide us with a detailed layout of the property, building, intended use, occupancy rating and fire marshal requirements which will be essential for us to install the commercial fire alarm effectively. Our team will take the approved plans and then add all fire alarm components with detailed descriptions to these plans, allowing for proper documentation and installation after approval.
The next step is for us to submit the fire alarm design to whichever relevant city or county authorities for approval. This process can vary significantly, and take anywhere from one to four weeks, depending on demand at the local government offices. If your project has a tight deadline, it is possible to expedite the process for after-hours review in some cities and counties. The city/county typically charges $200-$500, but you’ll receive approval within 24-48 hours. This can be a worthy investment for your company, if you need assistance through this process, give us a call at (832)653-2598.
After receiving approval from the local government, a permit is awarded, and a permit fee must be paid. Once the permit is acquired, we then order all the necessary parts for the fire alarm system. Where on-site installation begins with wiring. Depending on the design of the building, we will have to install the wires within the walls and/or ceiling. Which may lead to SheetRock needing to be re-installed. Despite a potential inconvenience, our experts will progress rapidly once the initial setup is complete. If or installation is pre ceiling install we can run the wires through the ceiling. If it is pre sheetrock installation, we can more easily run the wires. Once the wires are installed the “rough in phase” is completed.
Following wiring, fire panels and all other components of the fire alarm system will be installed. Which can include smoke detectors, heat sensors, alarms, sirens, strobes, voice evacuation systems and any other necessary devices.
A master electrician is required at this stage to run a 120V wire from the fire alarm panel to the electrical panel. Sometimes an additional Breaker is required to be added as well. It’s best if you have your own electrician but, if not, we can refer you to one.
Once in place and running, our team of experts will program the system to ensure all components communicate correctly with our call center, local fire departments and the owner of the building or business and are effective. Once the programming for fire panels and all devices is complete and meets all regulatory standards, a test is conducted to ensure reliability. The last step for the fire installation process is for Maverick to schedule an inspection by the Fire Marshall. Once the Fire Marshall completes the inspection and approves the system, the fire alarm process will be complete.
